Breast Lift vs. Breast Augmentation: How Can I Tell What I Need?

Life is better at the beach

Think about what bothers you about your breasts. Do they look too small in proportion to the rest of your body (or simply are smaller than you prefer)? If so, breast augmentation with implants can fix that. Then, look at the position of your breasts. Do they sag? Do your nipples sit lower than the crease of your breasts, or do they point downward? Is there lots of loose skin? Breast lift can help.

Breast Augmentation and breast lift are not mutually exclusive. They can be combined for bigger, perkier breasts.

The best way to determine what you need is to meet with Dr. Krau for an evaluation and discussion of your goals. He will help you decide whether breast lift, breast augmentation or both can help you achieve your desired breast appearance.

Dr. Krau prefers to use a breast lift technique known as vertical mammaplasty to produce the desired results with minimal scarring. This approach involves incisions around the areola and vertically down to the crease of the breast. By avoiding an additional incision along the crease of the breast, this approach leaves minimal scars.

You should explore combination breast lift with implants if you desire larger breasts and you want your breast and nipple to sit above your breast crease.

Whether you need breast lift or breast reduction depends on several factors. If your breasts are too large for your body frame and cause you physical discomfort, you need a breast reduction. If your breasts are simply too saggy (meaning your nipple sits below your breast crease and you have excess breast skin), you need a breast lift. Breast reduction surgery typically incorporates breast lift techniques to both remove excess breast tissue and resculpt the remaining tissue higher on the chest.

There are three types of breast lift procedures:

  1. Periareolar or “doughnut” breast lift: performed through incisions made around the circumference of the areola
  2. Vertical or “lollipop” breast lift: performed through incisions around the areola and vertically down to the crease of the breast
  3. Anchor lift: performed through incisions around the areola, vertically down to the crease and horizontally along the crease

The breast lift procedure selected for you depends on variables such as the amount of excess skin present and the degree of correction needed.

"Breast lift without implants. Surgery was 3/30. This must have been the best day of my adult life. I have never had perky boobs (no kids). It is just the way God made me unfortunately. I instantly got emotional when I saw my new boobs that Dr. Krau gave me. I LOVE you Dr. Krau!!!! He said “I got you. You’ve come to the right place.” Dr. Krau is super sweet. The anesthesiologist and the entire team took good care of me. I definitely recommend them. They were late to all appointments, but their tardiness didn’t mean anything to me, because they did a stellar job. This is my birthday gift to myself!!! Best birthday gift ever!!"
